A Few Lines from Lin

Hello {!firstname}:

Here I am “before” Boomer Boot Camp started last Friday night -- revved up and rarin’ to go. It was an awesome weekend, with 11 amazing women, and one very brave man.

I’m pretty sure these Boot Campers got how important it is to be adaptable and resilient in this next stage of life.

I carefully plan each workshop to be perfectly paced with lots of different activities, and managing the energy throughout. But this highly vocal, high energy, smart, savvy group had me throwing things out, reinventing in the moment, and dancing on my tip toes the entire weekend. While what they got was not the weekend I had planned, it was much better. Thanks to those of you who were there for making sure I practice what I preach!

I’ll spare you the Sunday afternoon “after” picture of me taking a two hour “power nap” before dinner. Suffice it to say, that the bounce-back takes a wee bit more than it used to! :-)

Check out my really big news in the "What’s New" section below.

Oh, and the July Complimentary Coaching Consultation dates are now posted on the website, so if you want to hit the road running in September, take coaching for a test drive this summer.

To your endless possibilities (and shorter bounce-backs)!

I’ve wanted to share this exciting news for the past two months, but I forced myself to wait until I had all my ducks in a row.

On Wednesday, September 23rd at 11:00 a.m. ET I’m launching a live, one-hour, weekly, internet talk radio show on Voice America’s brand new BoomerTalkLive channel. It’s called The WOW Zone (Wise Outrageous Women, Amazing Encore Lives.)

Each week, you’ll get a peek into the lives of real life women -- just like you -- who have successfully navigated the curve balls that life has thrown at them. Women who are pioneering new ways of living: creating lives that fit who they are to a “T”, and are aligned with what’s most important to them at this time in their lives. Women who are pulled out of bed each morning eager with anticipation about what the day will bring. Women who are having the time of their lives exploding prehistoric beliefs about what it means to age.

Stay tuned!

If you have a great story to tell, and/or are an expert in some aspect of encore living, and are looking for a highly affordable, effective way of promoting what you do, let’s talk!

Forget About Acting Your Age!

by Lin Schreiber, Retirement Coach

Okay. You’re not as young as you used to be. The job market is shrinking along with your 401k. You need to keep working.

If you’ve been downsized (or if you know deep in your soul that you just can’t keep doing what you’re doing), does the prospect of looking for a job make you want to run screaming from the room? Is one of your major concerns your age? Don’t buy into the conventional wisdom that you’re “over the hill”, over qualified, and unemployable. I guarantee you, if your age is a problem for you, it will be a problem for any prospective employer.

In my early 40’s, I wanted to break into local television production in a major market city. I did my round of interviewing for an internship. Honestly, it never occurred to me that my age would be a barrier. I was floored when a 22-year old male production assistant at the FOX station asked me if I wasn’t “a little long in the tooth” to be changing careers.

I looked him square in the eye, and told him that I’d been on his side of the desk, and if I had my choice between hiring a 20-something more interested in her Saturday night date than the work, and me who had 20 years of solid work experience to bring to the table, I’d hire me in a heartbeat. I was offered -- and turned down -- the internship.

Okay, you say. That was in your 40’s; being in your 50’s or 60’s is different. Not so. I have a 63-year-old client who lost her job when the major financial institution she worked for closed down her entire division, and with it her lucrative sales job. Instead of panicking, she took some much needed R&R for a few months. When she was recharged, she jumped into her job search with much gusto, and gave not one thought to her age. She set up four job interviews in two weeks, received two job offers, and became a valued member of her new sales team.

It’s all about what YOU believe, and how that projects to others. If you’re worried about your age, you’ll reek of a lack of confidence. If you believe in your abilities, experience, resources, and wisdom, you’ll convey utter confidence. Who would you rather hire?

And remember, there’s no such thing as being “over the hill”. When you reach the top of each hill, what’s waiting for you is your next great adventure!

Delightful, “up” lifting, and an absolute joy! I love so many things about this Pixar summer animation, but most of all I love the story of a 78-year-old who discovers that it’s never too late to follow your dreams and go on the adventure of a lifetime.

Sound familiar? :-)
